Family Movie Night with NooK!

There’s nothing like a family movie night with the kids. The popcorn is flowing, the kids aren’t arguing and you can enjoy some quality family time together! It’s one of our favourite things to do as a family on a Saturday night, snuggled up on our NooK Play Sofas.

In every family we know, the hardest part of family movie night is choosing a movie everyone can agree on. So we’ve compiled a list of the best family movies that the whole family can enjoy.

1. Moana

With a live action version of Moana in the works, now’s a good time to watch – or rewatch – the original. Moana is a princess with a difference… and we love her for it. The movie also has a catchy soundtrack that you’ll all be singing along to!

Make your own NooK raft to sit on while watching the movie or to extend the fun afterwards.

2. Sing

There’s a really positive message behind Sing – that is, in pursuing your passions and believing in yourself – and that’s why we love it so much. The soundtrack is great with a mix of different genres of music and there are loads of lovable characters.

After the movie, use your NooK to create a stage so they can sing all their favourite songs from the movie. Air guitar and hairbrush microphone both optional.

3. My Neighbour Totoro

If you’re keen for something a bit different to your usual Disney/Pixar family movies, try one of the Studio Ghibli classics like My Neighbour Totoro. It’s quite a whimsical story with a gentler pace than some of your typical family movie favourites. If you do like this one, there’s a whole catalogue of similar Studio Ghibli titles with many good family movies.

You can even try making your own Cat Bus with your NooK – the Campsite build is a good option for this – and pretend you’re off on your own adventures with Totoro.

4. How to Train your Dragon

A story about friendship, understanding and challenging the status quo, How to Train Your Dragon has a good mix of action, humour and emotion. It’s got dragons, Vikings and adventure – what more could you ask for?

Get your dragon trainers busy after the movie with their own Viking village with their NooK pieces. Add a Den for doors and use other pieces from around the playroom to extend the build.

5. Emma

For a mother/daughter movie night with your teens, the 2020 Emma is a great choice, particularly if you’re a lover of Jane Austen classics. It’s witty and charming with a good dose of Regency romance. Perfect for a girls’ movie night!

Even better if you can grab your Willow Cushion and head to bed to watch the movie there.

6. We Bought a Zoo

Ideal for tweens and teens, We Bought a Zoo is based on a true story about a dad who – you guessed it – buys a zoo. The zoo is run down but they rebuild it together as a family, making for an inspirational story.

With your NooK – and a few stuffed animal friends – you can make your own zoo… without having to commit to the cost of feeding all those animals every day! Any Extensions you have can be used to build extra enclosures to add more animals to your zoo.

7. The Greatest Showman

This is a cracker of a movie and a great one to watch with older kids also. It’s got an incredible cast, an interesting storyline and a soundtrack of big songs.

If you’re watching a movie with your teens, sitting together on a NooK Sofa build sounds mighty nice. Especially when opportunities to snuggle with them become so far and few between.

8. Coco

Another vibrant option with a great soundtrack is Coco. Younger kids will love the colourful characters and the lively storyline. For older children, there’s an opportunity to spark deeper conversations that stem from the film on topics like family and traditions.

Coco is also perfect for a family movie night under the stars. Set up your NooK in the backyard and project the movie onto a sheet hung over the fence. Add a few candles and fairy lights and it’s a total Coco vibe.

9. Brave

Brave has it all. A strong-willed Princess, a bear or two and a little dose of magic. It’s a good adventure story with strong values, making it a great family movie night idea.

Our Den Extension is the best way for your cubs to continue the Brave-play, allowing them to build their own bear’s den hideout.

10. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

There’s something about Roald Dahl books that make them brilliant for film adaptations. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is no exception. It stars Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka and is a fun, more modern take on the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

With a Market Stall build, you can set up your own chocolate factory storefront to buy some treats before the movie!

NooK Movie Night Set Up

Choosing the right movie is just the first part of your family movie night. Your setup also matters!

When you’re setting up a movie night at home, there’s so many ways you can use your NooK Play Sofa and Extensions. A simple sofa setup is an easy option that will generally keep everyone happy. Take your seating to the next level with a Cinema Lounge build and the kids will feel like they’re really at the cinema. All you need is some popcorn to finish off the cinema vibes.

If you like to lie down while you’re watching a movie, you can lay the NooK base cushions on the ground to make a bed surface. Then you can use pillows or Willow Cushions to prop you up. The Lily Pad is also a super comfy spot for watching a movie!

Whether it’s a comfy spot for your family movie night, a sleepover bed alternative to a fold-out sofa bed or endless hours of fun and play, NooK has you covered. Explore the NooK range and discover versatile, modular furniture you AND the kids will love.
